Leeds Polytechnic friends, Michele Howarth(foreground) and Mirella Paganuzzi, resident artists, Denne Hill 1983-84
Michele Howarth was born 1962 in Liverpool and studied at the Mabel Fletcher College and Leeds Polytechnic. She did a year long residency at Treadwell`s Denne Hill Gallery, following graduating in 1982, and showed work regularly with the gallery till 1997. Amongst the limited but very selective group of people who bought her work from the gallery was the Who`s John Entwhistle. Her Animation film “Oh Julie”, shared first prize with Wallace and Grommit at the World Animation Festival, Zagreb in 1993, and her play “Grope”, on a Marriage bureau theme had a successful month long run at Treadwell`s Art Mill Theatre, Bradford in 1992 (Billed as…Too Rude for London…). Her sculpture on an Edgar Allen Poe theme was shown at White Cube Gallery, London in 2008. In 2009, Nick Treadwell visited her in deepest Yorkshire and was pleased to note she was still obsessively making, and that the work was even more extraordinary…(for example…a dog with two dicks, would you believe?)
